PICTURE OF THE WEEK: Cambridge University May Ball Photos

SWNS Cambridge University May Ball Photos 2015

Hundreds of Cambridge University students partied the night away at the annual May Ball on Monday evening and SWNS was there to capture some of the glamorous students making their way home on the morning after.  It wasn’t quite the walk of shame as the well dressed students looked like they didn’t want the evening to end.
SWNS snapper James Linsell-Clark got involved in the action to bring us images from ‘the most sought after event on the student social calendar’, as described by organisers of The Trinity College ball, which has been held annually since 1866.  The photos document the students who were letting their hair down after a tough year of study, exams, and socialising.
Clare, Jesus and Trinity Colleges all hosted extravagant events with an impressive fireworks display.  The theme for Clare College’s event was ‘Imaginarium’ and had an ‘illusions room’ and circus performers.
Guests were invited to ‘pick a wild card’ at Jesus College and told they would ‘experience a night like no other’.
James’ Cambridge University May Ball photos really captured the fun and amusement and appeared throughout the national press.  You can see some his images here:

Sadly there were a handful of party-poopers.  Cambridgeshire police reported that a brawl threatened to disrupt proceedings at the Trinity May Ball when eight police officers were called to reports of a major fight after some locals attempted to gate-crash the party.

Reports claim that the incident took place shortly before the 10pm fireworks, after a security guard removed a man for trespassing on college grounds. The man and seven of his friends then started attacking the security guard.

Cambridgeshire police said there were also reports of people in punts, who had gathered to watch the fireworks, throwing glass bottles into the crowd of students.

The eight officers then spent half an hour using torches to search the crowd and find the culprits, but no arrests were made. You can read more about this story here: http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Police-called-Trinity-Ball-fight-breaks-riverbank/story-26707350-detail/story.html#ixzz3dJIKMnSm

Thankfully most of the revelers had fun and will now be looking forward to a well earned break during the summer months.
