We’re pleased to announce that Maciej Winiarczyk who lives in Caithness, Scotland, took this year’s winning shot. The field was strong and Maciej beat off competition from all of the talented, multi-award winning SWNS staff photographers. Maciej is an astro photography specialist and this shot of the Northern Lights set against the Milky Way with a volcano in the background is one of the best we’ve ever seen. SWNS distributed the winning photograph to several national newspapers.
Maciej won a voucher (to spend on Champagne!) and the SWNS Press Photo of the Year Award 2014 trophy.
SWNS is the largest press agency in the country distributing daily news, images and video to the national press via our newswire. It is estimated that SWNS provide around 15% of all daily news print. Our images come from staff photographers, freelance contributors, and members of the public wishing to cash-in on any press-worthy photos they’ve taken.
We’re always grateful for the talented photographers who submit to SWNS and we’re shortly launching an improved platform for contributors to sell their photos to the press. Anyone will be able to upload their interesting or breathtaking images straight to the SWNS Images system and will be able to see real time info on sales and payments. In the mean time, please keep sending us your photos and videos that are suitable for distribution.
Anyway, without further ado, here is the absolutely amazing winning photo in full glory…
The runner up photo was taken by Pete Griffiths during the summer’s electrical storms. We’ve never seen a better picture of lightning over the Clifton suspension bridge. A truly stunning shot.
Third place was this photo from the Yorkshire Stage of the Tour De France 2014. This brilliant shot was taken by the extremely talented SWNS staff photographer Tom Maddick. Look out for Tom’s photos daily in the national press.
